| On her own after a divorce and with 3 kids, one of them with special needs, Anne finished her degree and decided to try for the insurance claims field. She was hired by Frank Philipps at Farmers Insurance in Citrus Heights in a moment of luck.
“I learned so much from Frank and from Farmers,” Anne said. “They offered excellent training in those days and I learned so much from the training and my fellow adjusters. I got even more working knowledge from contractors in the field that I trusted. Don Lutz and John Kunkle were generous in sharing their knowledge of construction and estimating. All of the adjusters were partnering in a sense with guys like those to deliver the best service the customer and to be fair to the carrier. Everyone won; the customers, the carriers and the construction companies that we trusted to take care of the customers,” she explained.
“Claims handling is hard work,” Anne continued. “To be a success, one has to have a solid work ethic and those that don’t, don’t last.” “I have never had a lawsuit arise from my claims handling and DOI complaints have been very rare in my career. I think that is a result of always trying to do the right thing for people. I enjoy people and I am very glad to be able to help those that need it. The first contact is critical. I try to convey a positive attitude and empathize with the trauma that they have experienced. I think people know when you are trying to do the best job and usually want to cooperate fully to help the adjuster do the job and get them back to where they were before the incident.”
Anne feels lucky that she was part of a team through her years in the business. Wilson Wheeler –“a truly wonderful man!” Anne says, “he made sure that Carol Schave and Jenny Kilgore and I were part of his team through different carriers, TPA’s and states. We were happy to follow such a caring and honorable mentor.”
Anne was offered a transfer to Battle Creek, Michigan and moved from California with her children to that very different climate to start an office for Wilson Wheeler and later moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to initiate another office. Even Philadelphia Insurance, her current company, started up with Anne and one other person to begin to service claims in California a couple of years ago. The office has grown swiftly and the carrier enjoys a large book of church business along with condo associations. Anne now handles commercial property claims where the insureds aren’t as emotional, but often come with a need for speed to resolve the claim and get on with the business at hand. Mainly the carrier claims concern liability issues for the Western United States, but the adjusters fill in where needed anywhere in the country.
She has had a varied career and has no plans of leaving it behind anytime soon. She enjoys a great attendance record at all of her jobs, marred only by recent back surgery that kept her out of the office for a time. “I have a great job” Anne says “and I’ve had a great career. I’ve learned something new and exciting each place I’ve worked and I have no regrets as to my career choice. I’m still learning, every day there’s new challenges. I work in a wonderful office, we have a new supervisor in Mike Froehlich, but the management is mostly on Pennsylvania. John Kirby, our AVP of claims is so supportive and encouraging, I can’t imagine a better situation. A couple of our non-profit entities are very dear to me.” she continued. “Goodwill Industries and the Association for Retarded Citizens are two that we share the goal in providing the best possible customer service.”
Anne’s three children are grown and it is time to focus on her. She was invited to join friends in a trip to England this summer and is considering that option. |
