October 11, 2007 SCA luncheon

Construction defect claims can be a source of great frustration for claims professionals. Fortunately, they have experts to turn to for sage advice, and testing.

Michael O’Connor and Chuck Thomas, of O’Connor Engineering, are both well-versed in dealing with these types of issues.

The duo, having recently rejoined efforts to form the new company, brought their respective expertise to the October 11, 2007 meeting of the Sacramento Claims Association.

Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation featuring some detailed photos of pipe damage, Thomas and O’Connor tag-teamed to illustrate some of the most common issues cropping up today.

O’Connor, the author of a Claims Magazine article entitled “It’s in the Plumbing” stated, “we’ve had a lot of bad plumbing products come out on the market.”
Noting product defect, he continued, saying “a lot of problems relate to plastic connectors in sink and toilet lines.”

When asked about regulations and quality control, O’Connor said there are some regulations, but hedged on how there could be so many poorly designed fixtures being used. They’re cheap, basically.

“Don’t make any assumptions (about what caused the failure),” he stated. Use of engineering consultants such as their firm will pay off in many cases.

Their slide show also touched on microscopic photos of corroded pipes, and the use of infrared cameras for moisture detection.

The presentation was completed with a quick rundown on the vast services O’Connor Engineering is able to provide. Thomas and O’Connor may be reached for more information at: 916-640-0640, or by Chuck’s email: chuck@oconnor-engineering.com.
